Pronunciation rules for letter combinations composed of vowel e
The combination of the vowel letter e and other letters can form four letter combinations, namely ea, ee, ei and ey, and the r syllable letter combination ear, eer, eir, ere and er. We divide them into four groups for analysis: ea is the first group; ee is the second group; ei and ey are the third group; r syllable letters ear, eer, eir, ere and er are the fourth group.
In addition, the vowel letter e can also be combined with w to form the letter combination ew, which is usually pronounced /ōō/, as in the past tense forms of some verbs, such as blew, grew, threw and flew (ōō). Sometimes it can be pronounced /ōō/ or /ū/, as in the words new, news, and news pa per (ōō, ū). This combination of letters will not be introduced separately below.
