Pronunciation Rules for Consonant Letter g
The first sound of the consonant g is the consonant /g/, which is how it is pronounced in most words, such as in the words gas, get, gift, good, gun, angry, and dog.
The second pronunciation of consonant g is consonant /j/. This can be divided into three cases: first, when it is located before the vowel e, in most words, its pronunciation is /j/, such as in the words ges·ture, veg·e·ta·ble and gen· er al (j); second, when it precedes the vowel i, in some words it is pronounced /j/, as in gi raffe and gin ger (j); third , when it precedes the letter y, which plays the role of a vowel, or in the sequence of letters ge and dge, as in the words gym, age, and bridge(j).
The third pronunciation of the consonant g is /zh/, as in the word mi·rage(zh). In the words re·gime, ga·rage and mas·sage, the pronunciation of g can be /zh/ or /j/.
Also, when the consonant g is followed by a consonant n, it is not pronounced, as in the words sign and de sign (¢).
